Instructions for Authors

Any researcher may submit a manuscript if the scope of the manuscript is appropriate for KJCS and adheres to its guidelines. All authors should register with KACS. KJCS publishes only two articles (or one with correspondence) per author in each issue. Manuscripts will not be acceptable for publication unless they meet the following editorial requirements.

General Requirements

• The manuscript should be submitted in Korean or English.
• Regardless of the language of the body of the text, the title, abstract, tables, figures, acknowledgments, notes, and references should be prepared in English.
• The manuscript should be prepared in a Hangul (.hwp) or MicroSoft Word (.docx) file format.
• The manuscript should be double spaced in 11 point font on A4 sized paper.
• Unless otherwise stated, manuscripts should adhere to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.), and the Publication Guideline of the KJCS.
• Neither the author’s names nor their affiliations should appear on the manuscript.
• All manuscripts should be submitted via online submission system or email.
• Only standard abbreviation should be used.

Manuscript Type and Format

KJCS publishes research article, review, case report, book review, commentary, and editorial on all topics related to children and adolescents. Research articles are reports of empirical investigation (either quantitative or qualitative), and case studies are intended to report practical cases that can be encountered in education and intervention settings for children. The manuscripts for original articles or case studies must to be organized in the following sequence: title page, abstract and keywords, main text (introduction, methods, results, discussion and conclusion), acknowledgments, notes, conflict of interest statement, references, tables, figures, and ORCID. Manuscript template is available at http://www.childstudies.org. Tables and figures are usually put on separate pages, but can be embedded INSTRUCTION FOR AUTHORS in the text.

Reviews and special articles are mostly invited by the editor and should be comprehensive analyses of specific topics. The submitted manuscript should be reviewed to be published by the Editorial Board. The length of manuscripts for the empirical article and review should not be exceeded 25 pages including references, tables and figures. Case report should not be exceeded 15 pages. Editorials are invited by the editor. Editorials could include commentaries and reviews on recent publications, new research interests, fresh insights, and debates in the fields of child studies. Editorials, commentaries, and book reviews should not be exceeded 10 pages.

Manuscript Preparation

1. Title page
A manuscript title, each author’s full name and affiliation, and running title (no more than 35 characters in length) should be provided both in Korean and English. The title should be short, informative, and contain the major key words. The use of acronyms and abbreviations should be avoided. For a multicenter study, indicate each individual’s affiliation using a superscript Arabic number (1,2,3...). All persons designated as authors should be qualified for authorship. Each author should have participated sufficiently in the work to take public responsibility for the content. A ‘corresponding author’ for reprints should be indicated, and full contact information should be provided.

2. Abstract and keywords
The abstract should less than 250 words in English. Abbreviations or references are not allowed in the abstract. Objective, methods, results and conclusion of the article should be clearly shown in the abstract. Abstract template is available at http://www.childstudies.org. Up to 5 keywords should be listed at the bottom of the abstract to be used as index terms.

3. Main text
Organize the manuscript into four main headings: Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusion. Abbreviations should be minimized. When necessary, spell out the full term the first time it appears in the text, add the abbreviation in parentheses, and use the abbreviation thereafter.

  • Introduction: The purpose of the investigation, relevant background information, reviews of previous research, and research questions and hypotheses should be described.
  • Methods: The research plan, subjects, and the measures used should be described, in that order. Methods of statistical analysis and criteria for statistical significance should be described. When using more sophisticated statistical methods, specify the statistical package, version number, and nondefault options used.
  • Results: The results should be presented in logical sequence in the text, tables, and figures. The text may not repeat all the data in the tables or figures, but describe important points and trends.
  • Discussion and conclusion: The results of research should be interpreted for readers. The contents of the introduction or results should not be simply repeated. Rather, new and important findings should be emphasized. The meaning of the observed opinion, along with its limits, should be explained, and within the limits of the research results, the conclusion should be connected to the purpose of the research.

4. Acknowledgments
All contributors who do not meet the criteria for authorship should be listed. Persons who have contributed intellectually to the paper but whose contributions do not justify authorship may be named. Examples of those who might be acknowledged include a person who provided purely technical help, writing assistance, or a department chair who provided only general support. Authors should disclose whether they had any writing assistance and identify the entity that paid for this assistance. All sources of funding applicable to the study should be stated here explicitly.

5. Notes
Any presentation history at a meeting/conference should be included if relevant. It needs to be indicated, if the study was submitted as a master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation toward an academic degree.

6. Conflict of interest statement
Authors should include any such declarations (having informed the editor first). The information must be specific, including the financial relationship that any author has with sponsoring organizations and the for-profit interests the organizations represent and with any for-profit products discussed or implied in the text of the manuscript. Any commercial or financial involvements that might represent an appearance of a conflict of interest also should be disclosed

7. References
References should be listed in the APA style. All references must be written in English, complete, and accurate. English titles of literatures written in Korean can be found on the websites of the National Research Foundation of Korea, and the Korea Education and Research Information Service. Each reference must be cited in text and all references cited in text should appear in the list. Unpublished results and personal communications are not recommended in the reference list. Where possible, the DOI for the reference should be included at the end of the reference, and online citations should include the date of access.

8. Tables
Tables should be numbered in the form Table 1, Table 2, and Table 3. The title of the table should be on top placed. If numerical measurements are given, the unit of measurement should be included in the column heading. The statistical significance of observed differences should be indicated by * for p < .05, ** for p < .01, and *** for p < .001.

9. Figures
The figures should be numbered in the form Figure 1, Figure 2, and Figure 3. Only the first letter of the first word in the title and data should be capital letters. All abbreviations should be described as full name in each figure. Image files for the figures should be prepared in high resolution (4inch, 900dpi).

SUBMISSION

All manuscripts should be submitted via online submission system (http://www.childstudies.org). Author candidates need to create an account at the first time of submission, and if you have reviewed or authored for the journal in the past year it is likely that you will have had an account created. Once you have logged into your account, the online system will lead you through the submission process. Submission guidelines are available on the website. If you would like to submit your paper by email, please contact the editorial office at gochildren@hanmail.net prior to submission. In addition, all authors are asked to submit signed Author Statement Form, and Author’s Checklist. We conduct expedited reviews on a first come, first-served basis, and authors should submit a request for expedited review. The expedited reviews are limited to five manuscripts. The manuscript submission deadline is the last day of February, April, June, August, October, and December. This journal has submission fee of 100,000 KRW (200,000 KRW for expedite review).

PEER REVIEW PROCESS

All manuscripts will be reviewed initially by the Editor-In-Chief to verify whether they meet the editorial standards of the Journal (within one week of submission). KJCS uses a blinded peer review process. Following the initial review, each manuscript will be reviewed by two or three reviewers. Reviewers are qualified scholars and experts who have adequate knowledge in the field. In addition, suggested reviewers may not be at the same institution as any of the manuscript authors. The authors’ names and affiliations are not disclosed to reviewers during the review. Only limited information would be informed to a member of the editorial board if he or she is among the authors. They will not be given special treatment. An initial decision will be made, and reviewer comments will be presented to authors within 4 weeks of submission via online submission system. An expedited review is also available with extra submission charges, informing an initial decision within 2 weeks.

Acceptance of the manuscript is decided based on the critiques and recommended decision of the reviewers. The reviewers are requested to identify one of four recommendations for publication: accept as is, accept with minor revisions, revision and resubmission, and reject. If two reviewers decide to reject SUBMISSION the manuscript, it may not be considered for publication. If required, the corresponding author should resubmit a revised manuscript and indicate the alterations that have been made in response to the reviewers’ comments item by item. Failure to resubmit the revised manuscript within a certain period of time is regarded as a withdrawal. For submission of revised manuscript, please contact the Editorial Board to check if it may be possible to delay submission. The final decision for publication will be made by the editor in chief.

FINAL PREPARATION FOR PUBLICATION

Final version and copyright: After the paper has been accepted for publication, the author(s) should submit the final version of the manuscript. The names and affiliations of the authors should be double-checked, and if the originally submitted image files were of poor resolution, higher resolution image files should be submitted at this time. If references, tables, or figures have been moved, added, or deleted during the revision process, they should be reviewed to verify accuracy and completeness. When published, a manuscript will become the property of KJCS. Copyrights of all published meaterials are owned by the KACS and must not be published elsewhere without written permission. Upon acceptance of a manuscript, authors will be asked to sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement. Acceptance of the agreement will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information.

Manuscript Corrections: Before publication, the manuscript editor will format the manuscript to adhere to the standard publication format. The author(s) must respond within 5-7 days when the manuscript editor contacts the author for revisions. If the response is delayed, the manuscript’s publication may be postponed to the next issue.

Galley Proof: The author(s) will receive the final version of the manuscript as a PDF file. Within 2-3 days of receipt, corrected galley proofs should be sent to the editorial office by e-mail (gochildren@hanmail.net). Any errors found after this time are the responsibility of the author(s) and will have to be corrected as an erratum.

Publication Charges: In addition to the page charge of 20,000 KRW per page, publication processing fee (up to 10 pages) of 200,000 KRW should be paid. Extra charge will normally be applied to funded research. The account number for a wire transfer is 140-009-502839, Shinhan Bank (Korean Association of Child Studies).
